Books & Bodies: Places of Resistance
As long as books have existed, there have been people who want to control which books we read. Today, we are witnessing a renewed wave of book bans in many places, fuelled by heated debates about which books should be accessible.
At the same time, we are observing a gradual erosion of bodily rights – because certain books and bodies were and still are considered transgressive, even dangerous.
Reading can be an act of resistance – as can dancing.
Books & Bodies explores the parallels between stories, bodies, and dance as powerful tools to challenge societal assumptions, demand presence, and understand artistic creation as a form of resistance. Through music, movement, and words, the piece reveals what lies hidden beneath our skin, gives voice to unheard stories, and celebrates the wisdom and resilience of artists with disabilities.
Books & Bodies is an inclusive dance work commissioned for Theatre Münster's 2025 season, performed at the Münster City Library, an architectural gem and anchor of the city's public life. It is available for touring and can be adapted for Libraries with large indoor spaces.
Access: Text in German integrated into the work, Audio Description available in German, live Sign Interpretation possible, relaxed performance possible.
