Starting With the Limbs

Starting With the Limbs is a collaboration between Annie Hanauer and Cie. L’autre Maison based in Marseille, France.

Annie Hanauer & L'Autre Maison present an interdisciplinary work that takes the experience of wearing a prosthetic limb as its starting point. Starting with the Limbs brings four dancers into a series of innovative choreographic variations, incorporating “wearable and portable sculptures” designed by artist Ghali Bensouda. Using digital morphogenesis and 3D printing, these structures serve a dual function—both as costumes and scenographic elements—rooting the performers within the landscape in a way that is both poetic and organic.

The scenic objects shape the stage into a series of abstract landscapes. Their texture, reminiscent of bone, stones, or prosthetics, creates a sensory and cognitive resonance between familiarity and strangeness. Conceptual and adaptable, these objects become supports, constraints, or play partners, shaping the movement through ongoing interaction.

Drawing from her own experiences and those of the four dancers—both disabled and non-disabled—particularly their relationship with limbs perceived as “non-normative,” Annie Hanauer crafts a series of unique choreographic portraits. Each performer expresses their individuality while maintaining a constant listening to others, giving rise to living tableaux. These unique bodily landscapes redraw the boundaries between body and environment, offering a new perception of movement and identity.
